Collecting Vintage – An Interview with Carpebellus 3

It is always interesting to talk to people who collect vintage treasures.  In this interview, we find out more about Carissa, the owner of the vintage shop Carpebellus on Etsy.

Why and when did you start collecting?

I’ve been collecting since I could walk.  Both of my parents are avid collectors and I grew up following them through antique malls and flea markets looking for my own treasures.  My mother encouraged my addiction spirited interest in collecting by helping me find everything from 1950s boxer dog figurines to Victorian hat pins.

Who or what was your influence for collecting?

I love learning, so I think I’m influenced to collect whatever subject is fascinating me at the moment.  I studied archaeology as an undergraduate and am currently a museum studies graduate student, so I love things that tell a story about their history or inspire curiosity.  My taste is pretty eclectic—I love well-worn books about strange themes, aesthetically beautiful midcentury modern pieces, old cameras, faded globes, natural history specimens, turquoise jewelry, black-and-white photos with mysterious subjects, vinyl records, and more.

What is one of your favorite pieces and why?

It’s hard to choose a favorite child, but probably my midcentury modern starburst wall clock.  I’ve practically designed my living room around it.  It’s so striking and a testament to my shopping savvy—I paid $6 for it at my favorite local flea market.

What tips can you give us about collecting?

Find things that fill you with wonder.  Whether it’s about who used to own it, how it was used, or the part it played in history, unearthing something with a fascinating story is one of the best rewards.

What would by your holy grail piece and why?

I have far too many books, but a rare first-edition would be quite the prize.  I’d love to have Rose in Bloom by Louisa May Alcott.  It’s a childhood favorite that I’ve read countless times.

Where do you look for new items to add to your shop or collection?

My favorite place is a giant indoor flea market about 15 minutes from home.  It’s housed in a metal warehouse with a crazy mix of items and the junkin’ opportunities are primo!  I also love estate and garage sales, seasonal flea markets, and hole-in-the-wall antique and thrift stores I find while travelling.

How has collecting changed or affected your life?

Collecting has been so central to my life that I’ve decided to make it my job.  I’m going into museum education as a career where I will be able to use institutional collections to inspire others to love and preserve our incredible shared past.

This photo is from my very first archaeological excavation.  In the same vein as stumbling across a killer piece at a flea market, here I am enthralled by unearthing a domesticated turkey bone at an Ancestral Puebloan site in Colorado.
