Gilded or Gilt… a Guilty pleasure

In United States history, the Gilded Age was the period following the US Civil War, roughly from the end of Reconstruction in 1877 to the turn of the twentieth century. The term was coined by writers Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner in The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today, satirizing what they believed to be an era of serious social problems hidden by a thin layer of gold.

Often when I am treasure hunting, I find myself attracted to framed mirrors and sconces that have been guided gold and worn to a lovely patina. The base can be made of wood or metal or even a composite of wood and plastic. (think Syroco products)
The best pieces have layers of red or black paint beneath the gold to give it depth.

You can create a focal point in a minimalist space with just a few gilt pieces without getting all Liberace!
