Whether you like you dogs fun size, snack size or king size, there’s a poodle for you. Poodles were the reigning AKC favorite of American dog owners for 22 straight years from 1960 until 1982, or to put it in terms vintage lovers can relate to, from the mid century modern era to the new wave era. They’ve continued to hold a place in the AKC’s top ten just about every year since.
Hard to imagine, but standard poodles, the largest of the three poodle breeds, are thought to have originated in Germany as hunting dogs. Lore holds that the clip seen on poodles prancing about show rings was designed to aid the dog on its mission to retrieve a hunter’s latest trophy from water. Miniature poodles may once have also been field dogs, perhaps using their acute noses to locate truffles. Toy poodles toughest field challenge was likely capturing stray tidbits dropped from an hors d’oevre tray.
