Collecting Vintage – An Interview with SugarCookieLady 5

We love talking to people who collect vintage treasures.  In this interview, we find out more about Susan, the owner of the vintage shop SugarCookieLady on Etsy.

Why and when did you start collecting?

I began collecting in the mid 1990s, but started taking greater interest in 1997.  Life had turned upside down for me and a sweet friend took me to a flea market.  Much joy was found in looking on curiosities and the beautiful patina of all the booths.  I was hooked and started collecting in earnest.

Who or what was your influence for collecting?

The summer spent in France in 1993 cultivated my interest for architectural items and French antiques.  Over the years, I have been in the homes of friends and relatives whose homes were full of an eclectic mix of antiques and modern pieces.  I longed to feather my nest in a similar way, with items I love.

What is one of your favorite pieces and why?

My favorite piece is an enormous cast iron chandelier that hangs in my living room.  It took two years of scouring fleas, estates sales, and online ads.  A craigslist ad had just been posted for a “ HEAVY $20 painted white chandelier” with a photo attached.  I immediately shot off an email and agreed to drive to pick it up immediately in Wrigleyville.  A friend hung the huge beast for us and we set a dimmer switch so that we can enjoy its glow every day.  So romantic.  I wire tiny spun cotton birds on it at Christmas time.

What tips can you give us about collecting?

Buy what you love.  Love what you buy!

What would be your holy grail piece and why?

Hmmm.  A true vintage pink aluminum Christmas tree.

Where do you look for new items to add to your shop/collection?

Where don’t I look?  Estate sales, online, word of mouth, thrift stores, garage sales.  The thrill of the hunt is pretty wonderful!

How has collecting changed or affected your life?

I cannot tell you how many lovely people I have met on this journey of collecting and junking.  It is pretty special when someone shares your affinity for items that the majority of the world sees as cast offs.

Where can we find you?
