Shop of the Week- SparklyLark 4

This week’s Shop of the Week is SparklyLark, owned by Cindy.

What is the meaning behind your shop name?

Coming up with a shop name was so frustrating for me. I wanted the vibe to be lighthearted and happy, but I drove myself crazy. I tried to incorporate both of my grandmas’ names into the shop, since they were influential in my life, and some of my most prized possessions are things they passed down to me. It just didn’t work. So, I made a long list of words that I liked and I started putting them together until I came up with SparklyLark. It seems to me like you can’t say the name without smiling. So actually, no meaning whatsoever!

How did you get your start selling vintage?

Back to the grandmas. Both were great at reusing and repurposing (way before their time!) everything. Both of their husbands were able to make something out of practically nothing. I grew up loving and appreciating vintage, especially old and well-used everyday items. As they passed, I ended up being the one in the family who was given the crusty but awesome things no one else wanted. I wouldn’t part with most of those, but I did find myself going to estate and rummage sales and buying more of the same. At some point I realized it was time to thin out my collection. It’s hard parting with some things, but I really love the fact that some of the items I’ve had in boxes will go to someone who will use them often and appreciate them.

What is your favorite item in your shop right now and what makes it special to you?

That changes daily, but today it’s vintage glass Christmas ornaments. They make me nostalgic and bring back great memories. I have my own collection, but I’m always on the lookout to buy more to put in the shop. I’ve had customers get so excited when they find something they remember from their past. I just love that.

What is the most unusual item you have sold in your shop?

I sold an anatomy textbook from the early 1900s with lots of detailed illustrations. I debated for months about whether anyone would show interest, especially since it was written in German, but finally I decided to add it to the shop. It sold pretty quickly.

About Mary - PassedBy

I have always enjoyed finding and using vintage items in my home, and am especially fond of vintage linens with embroidery or handwork details. I collect a wide variety of vintage goods including classroom memorabilia and toys. As a seller, I try to follow the advice - buy what you love. This makes it so much easier to create an online shop with vintage items I would gladly use in my own home.
