Tomorrow, March 10th, is Daylight Savings Time.
Did You Know?
- Benjamin Franklin was half joking when he suggested daylight savings. He proposed this concept in a satirical essay that was published in 1784. His words: “All the difficulty will be in the first two or three days; after which the reformation will be as natural and easy as the present irregularity […] Oblige a man to rise at four in the morning, and it is more than probable he will go willingly to bed at eight in the evening; and, having had eight hours sleep, he will rise more willingly at four in the morning following.”
- It was World War I that pushed daylight savings into law. In 1916, Germany was the first country to adopt Daylight Savings Time. It was created to conserve coal during WWI, and Britain and other European nations followed Germany’s lead. In 1918, this change came to the USA and we used daylight savings as an electricity-saving measure.
- In the 1970s, daylight savings became important as the oil embargo kicked off a nationwide energy crisis and the government was looking for ways to reduce consumption.
- Daylight savings might actually be an energy waster. In 2008, a study showed that while changing the clocks can save money on lighting, the cost of heating and air conditioning tends to go up.
- Daylight savings can be a health hazard. An increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and susceptibility to illness have been linked to the time change.
- 2am is when Daylight Savings Time ends and begins – mainly because most people aren’t awake to notice the change.

Love this. #ticktock #springforward
I love daylight savings time — and vintage clocks! Time for spring!
Fabulous finds! I'm just happy we are headed into Spring!
So interesting, and what a great grouping of time-related vintage!
Still snow on the ground but I heard a flock of geese this morning. It will stay lighter longer and soon yellow daffodils will dare to peek their heads up out of the earth. I love Daylight Savings Time! I also love Vintage Clocks! Enjoyed the collection.
JD….What a fun collection you pulled together to help remind people to get out of bed on time. I love the post card of the schoolmaster chastising the little boy whose Mom didn't get the message. 😆
Very interesting. Who would have thought that daylight savings time originated so long ago? I had no idea, for sure. Loved the vintage collection curated to go with this article, and I'm particularly partial to the vintage clocks tea towel. Vintage linens are one of my favorite items to collect.
Such a fun and interesting collection! Love daylight savings time! It's so depressing when we set the clocks back and it gets dark at 4:30 pm. So looking forward to spring!
Thank you for the reminder and this wonderfully "timely" collection! I honestly would not have remembered the time change if not for your interesting article. I so enjoyed looking at all the different clock styles and playing "find the clock" in the other picks. Thanks ever so much for including me.
Spring is coming, Spring is coming 🙂
Timely article and great collection! Thanks for including my Big Ben clock. After reading this, I hope I'm not the one who forgets to set my clocks ahead 😀
Great information and very cool vintage items! I had never taken the time (no pun) to know why we do this crazy thing twice a year. The health risks make perfect sense. 🙂
