Friday night… all the big deals have been sealed, clients cajoled, and payroll completed – he’s on his way home! You’ve got the kids fed and bathed, snuggled into their rooms. You put on your new cocktail dress and high heels, set out the cheese, crackers, fondue and finger sandwiches. He’ll walk through the door soon – set down his briefcase and greet you with a huge hug and kiss. Then he’ll loosen up his tie and get the bar set-up in the den… mix himself a martini, and pour you a glass of Merlot while he’s at it. Just as you get the ashtrays set out, the guests arrive. The Smiths arrive first (they always do), then the Nelsons and Andersons. The Drapers and Rogers always show up together – those four are inseparable. The LPs will play, you’ll all drink, laugh, smoke cigarettes and tell crude jokes until well after midnight. Another perfect Friday night!
Fast forward 50 years – you both come home from work about the same time after picking the kids up at daycare. You retreat to separate rooms to change into “comfortable clothes”. He cracks a beer, and you pour YOURSELF a glass of wine. After a quick pizza dinner, you all crash in front of the TV to watch a pay per view movie, then it’s off to bed. Another boring Friday night.
C’mon people! It’s time to bring back the Cocktail Party! Invite your friends and neighbors over, set out the snacks, fire up the iTunes and cut loose! Mix up some lively drinks – alcohol optional of course. Decorate with some cool, vintage-retro accessories, and pour yourself a high-ball! Oh, and make sure to call a cab for the Drapers and Rogers.
