This week’s Tastes Like Vintage guest blogger is Donna from stellabystar.
Here in New England, September weather ranges from humid and summer-like to cool and crisp. But the evenings and nights most definitely get noticeably cooler.
The month of September also means back to school, which brings back wonderful memories of years gone by. I used to volunteer for field trips when my girls were young (they are now in their 20’s!), and September always meant an excursion to one of our many local apple orchards!
With that in mind, I hope you enjoy this recipe for Baked Apples, taken from The Better Homes and Gardens Junior Cook Book for the Hostess & Host of Tomorrow, copyright 1963.
Baked Apples
You will need
– an apple corer
– a covered baking dish
– measuring cups and spoons
– potholders
Ingredients
– 4 apples
– 1/4 cup brown sugar
– 2 teaspoons butter or margarine
– 1 cup water
– Set the oven temperature at 375 degrees
– Wash the apples thoroughly and dry them
– Remove the cores
– Put the apples in a baking dish
– Pack the cores with brown sugar and butter
– Pour water around the apples
– Place a cover over the dish
– Bake about 45 minutes
– Test tenderness with a fork. If fork doesn’t prick easily, put back in oven for a bit
more baking time.
Nothing in the world is more intoxicating than apples baking…mmmmmmm
