Bring It Home: The Vintage Schoolhouse

Welcome to a new series on the Vintage Etsy Society blog!  “Bring It Home” will appear each Sunday, and will feature popular themes in home decorating, paired with a treasury of Vestiesteam items to inspire you to bring that theme into your home.

Bring It Home is written by Lisa Natcharian of Helene’s Legacy, an Etsy shop featuring unique, vintage hostess gifts.  Her blog about bringing vintage style to your daily life can be found here.

Do you love that nostalgic, “back-to-school” time of year?  You can recreate that cozy feeling in your own home using warm wood tones, autumnal shades of deep red and mustard, and charming vintage school artifacts.  To keep your vignette from becoming too kitschy, avoid the obvious school desk and chair combination, and search for more esoteric pieces.  Just a few simple items placed together can suggest school days, especially those that feature cursive lettering or block numbers.

The wildly popular chalkboards found everywhere today can anchor a lovely “schoolhouse” room as well.  And do you remember those red plaid kilt skirts everyone used to wear in the fall?  A bit of red plaid in your decor will bring nostalgic memories to mind without actually having to wear a short skirt again!

What says “schoolhouse” most to you?  What would you add to your back-to-school vintage decor?
