Shop of The Week – Fancy That 7

1. Can you tell us a little bit about you and your shop

I’ve always loved old and forgotten things. As a child, I would trade the Coke bottles and ephemera found on our farm for very specific and well thought over selections of 40 year old buttons at the local antique store. The thrill I get from unearthing something special is not all that different from the feeling a gambler gets from a win. I. Cannot. Stop.

I started selling vintage clothing and accessories way back in 2006 when I realized that I didn’t have enough closet space for the amount of treasures I was snatching up. I felt like I couldn’t just leave those gorgeous cowboy boots or that 1960s prom dress even though they didn’t fit me. I was a poor college kid with an overwhelming collection of clothing and shoes that I couldn’t even wear and little to no money. When I found out about Etsy, it was a perfect solution to my problems.

In 2011, I re-branded. School was well over, and I decided to focus my energy on building a successful business that could pay the bills. I also moved every last item into a new shop with a new name, and Fancy That Vintage was born. Of course, a month later, Etsy rolled out the change your shop name feature. (D’oh!) Now, I spend my days in my tiny home office with my dress forms and my inventory. Well, some of my inventory may have found its way into the living room for lack of space, but I think my boyfriend has finally just given up and accepted that I’m slowly taking over the house.

I should probably also mention my blog over at www.fancythatvintage.blogspot.com. It’s kind of a supplement to my shop in that I focus on vintage fashion and style icons. I also did a six part series on “How to Thrift”, although, I’m sure all of you are pretty seasoned in that.

2. What is your favorite era and why?

I would have to say that as far as my own personal style goes, the seventies are my home base. I love the rock n roll bohemian look as well as the Studio 54 vibe. My closet reflects a fairly decent mixture of the two. I would happily drown in a sea of kimonos, sequins, and Bianca Jagger style menswear. I do, however, have a soft spot for the styles in 1960s French New Wave films. The whole trench coat, sailor top, flats combo is also a favorite fallback of mine. I won’t even say how many black and white striped shirts I have. (Psst… the answer is “too many” and yet, somehow, “not enough”.)
3. What is your favourite item in your shop at the moment?
My favorite item has to be this jacket. Sheer black silk, crazy sequins, beading… I mean, what more could you want? My heart breaks a little every time I think of that fact that it doesn’t fit me. Why can’t you just be mine, crazy amazing sequin flower jacket? Whyyyyyyyyyyyy?!
