Bring It Home: Burlap For Fall 1

Welcome again to our new weekly series, Bring It Home.  Each Sunday we’ll feature a hot decorating trend, paired with a treasury of Vestiesteam member items to inspire you to bring the new look into YOUR home.

Burlap is everywhere these days, and although it’s charming and seems to lend itself to a cozy farmhouse decor, it’s important to pair it with contrasting styles and textures to keep from feeling as though you live in a barn!  Feed sacks are cute, but not on every surface.

Here you can see what happens to burlap (and its cousins, French linen and grain sack cloth) when it lives with a bit of industrial black metal and some zippy pops of deep red.  The sleek black provides a beautiful contrast which makes the burlap look appealingly knobby, and the little bits of red (and maybe some gold) add sophistication and something for your eye to rest on.

The key to making this marriage of opposites work is subtlety.  Let most of your room be rustic wood and solid colors, and use the burlap, black and red as accents.  Remember, combining various weights of burlap will make the combination more noticeable, and a bit of old lace is a lovely contrast as well.

Do you have any burlap in your home decor this fall?  Where did you use it?

If you were featured in today’s treasury, don’t forget to share this post with your bloggy friends!

I love the texture of burlap contrasting with the sheen of glass/crystal and metallic items. Also like the point you made of pairing burlap with old lace is great!
