Get the Look: Plate Love 5

Plate symmetry, vintage style.

It’s hard to say when plates as decor fell from grace. A decorating staple for most of the century, sometime in the 1970s or 1980s they were relegated back to the cupboard for use in the expected fashion. Growing up, my mother’s Johnson Bros. Friendly Village was hung with great pride on our dining room wall. Now, when we actual use it to serve dinner on Thanksgiving, I have a small twinge of guilt, like I’ve taken our family’s Mona Lisa and piled it high with mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce (still  in the shape of the can, rings included).

Plates are definitely back. They’re the wall flowers of wall decor in the nicest possible ways. Google “decorating with plates” and creativity and inspiration pour forth at the speed of, well at the speed of a Google search. Ironstone, transferware, handpainted, chintz printed…you  name it, you can find someone decorating with it. My personal taste runs to the travel souvenir plate, when the memento of choice was not a sweatshirt but a precious piece of china. A tip of the hat should also go to artists who creatively upcycle old china into wonderful, witty wall art.

What a fabulous collection & post, thanks for including my antique Pratt ware plate. Decorating walls and cabinets with plates is such a beautiful idea and I think it is making a comeback. In a magazine I recently perused, I came across a photo of a wall of mismatched pink & red transfer plates and thought it looked stunning! The china I used for holidays is proudly displayed on my hutch all year long and when our remodel on our living and dining rooms is complete I am adding plates to the walls in both rooms. Great post!

What a wonderful post ~ and many thanks for including my flow blue plate! Taking your lead with this subject, I'm going to do a post about decorating with plates on my blog as well (www.eitherorfinds.blogspot.com) and link to this one. I use plates to decorate with in my own home and have quite a collection of them that I've found at flea markets and yard sales. Love this Vestie blog!
