Bring It Home: Rustic Autumn Decor

Autumn is a beautiful time of year, with its gorgeous leaves and crisp air.  Decorating for autumn brings the colors red, orange and gold to mind — lovely shades that can be used on a wide spectrum from exuberantly bright to quietly muted.

How can you decorate if gentle, subdued hues are your favorite?  One very important point to remember is that autumn is essentially a celebration of endings.  Flowers die, leaves fall, grasses go dormant.  To avoid your decor looking too morbid and shriveled, choose warm, comfortable, lived-in items to bring to mind cozy hibernation as opposed to lifeless, weary leftovers.

Autumn is a wonderful time to make use of everlasting, natural pieces, like leaves, twigs, pinecones and dried grasses.  Combine these with the gorgeous patina of aged leather for a warmed-up, snug and comfortable room that speaks of welcoming throw blankets, favorite novels, logs on the fire, and the scent of beef stew wafting in the air.

What do you like to use in your fall decorating?
