Adding vintage decor to my home is fun all year round, but the MOST fun time to indulge in my passion for vintage is Christmas.
The very first vintage items I acquired were my grandparents’ Christmas decorations when I was in high school. My mother decided to “clean out” her ornaments and get rid of the ones that were showing their age, and I scooped up everything she was trying to throw away and spirited them off to my room to save them from the trash bin!
The pinecone elves, Shiny Brite ornaments, Putz glitter houses and mercury glass beads all found homes in little vignettes that I’d create, reminding me of happy memories of Christmas dinners with my grandparents, who died when I was eleven and twelve years old. It’s funny how parents and children tend to gravitate toward opposite styles … my mother is ruthlessly contemporary, while I’m drawn to vintage, and my son is a fan of modern lines!
Adding 1940’s vintage Christmas style to your home is breathtakingly easy, as there are so many sources for vintage ornaments and decorations. My advice would be to spread out the kitschy bits and provide lots of solid color backgrounds to set off the beautiful details of the decorations. Setting vintage pieces off with space and color makes them into pieces of art, and your eye can appreciate them more. Other than that, I’m sure you can “bring home” vintage Christmas style very easily without my advice 🙂
