Shop of the Week- Aloof Newf Whimsy 4

This week’s Shop of the Week is Aloof Newf Whimsy, owned by Kate.

What is the meaning behind your shop name?

Originally, I owned a brick and mortar shop that was named after our Newfoundland dogs. The name actually was the inspiration of my husband and children. When I decided to give Etsy a try, I used AloofNewfWhimsy since it was an extension of my shop which already existed. By this point, I had also developed a following through flea markets and antique shows that I did in Ann Arbor and Petoskey, Michigan. We would take our dogs to the shows with us and they were always big hit. The name ‘AloofNewfWhimsy’ name was unusual and unique which was the look that I was going for with my Etsy shop– a place where I could showcase and sell the treasures that I found in my neighborhood and travels.

What is your favorite item in your shop right now, and what makes it special to you?

I buy the things that I love or the type of things that I would want to put in my home. So it’s one of those things– I like everything that I sell. I just listed an item that I fell madly in love with at first sight. While surfing through a wonderful antique shop in Florida, I ran across the most stunning Palais Royal French Mother of Pearl egg sewing kit. It was quite unusual so I knew that it had to come home with me. So after a bit of haggling, a deal was made and home it came.

What is the most unusual or amazing item you have sold from your shop?

I have sold so many amazing and unusual items in my shop over the past few years from dress forms to incredible Italian Florentine lamps. Recently I sold a set of Anri Italian hand carved wood Nativity figures. They were amazing. It takes nearly four weeks to carve each figurine to perfection. In addition they are delicately hand painted. They were truly a fabulous find!

About Mary - PassedBy

I have always enjoyed finding and using vintage items in my home, and am especially fond of vintage linens with embroidery or handwork details. I collect a wide variety of vintage goods including classroom memorabilia and toys. As a seller, I try to follow the advice - buy what you love. This makes it so much easier to create an online shop with vintage items I would gladly use in my own home.
