There’s Nothing Better Than Springtime with Vintage! 12

Spring has finally arrived!

Now is the perfect time to refresh your home decor by welcoming the bright colors of Spring. And what better way to decorate than to find new uses for vintage items – things that can be reused for each change in season.

Here are some ideas from our team members to get you started.

TIP: Click on the photos below to go directly to the items used in the photos – they are all available for sale. But hurry! They won’t last long!

Here in Wisconsin, a pot of pansies on the porch is a sweet reward for putting up with months of chilly weather. The bright little pansy faces can provide welcome pops of color while the grass is still greening up, because, despite their name, pansies are actually quite hardy.

I love old houses and cottage gardens, but I live in a modern subdivision. Pairing flowers with vintage planters, enamelware tubs and other random finds gives our front porch a more rustic feel. Here, a chippy mint green child’s chair subs for a plant stand, and a pink and black plastic sprinkling can completes the vignette.

This little owl was “born” in the 1980’s. He’s carved from wood and has great big eyes! You can use him with flowers, succulents or air plants. A little tea light will make him glow. Fill him with candy or small trinkets for holidays or everyday. He’s quite versatile 🙂

Most people don’t think of nutcrackers until the holidays when everyone seems to have a big bowl of unshelled almonds and pecans on display. Here’s a new way to incorporate a squirrel nutcracker into spring decor. He makes a nice display on a coffee table or desk or maybe a windowsill.

This little guy is the perfect foil for spring flowers. Who knows what he may be thinking. I’m reminded of my outdoor critters and how much they seem to love tulips…mainly climbing the stems or digging the bulbs. Despite that they’re ever entertaining and so much fun to watch. This one is well behaved, by the way.

Here in the upper Midwest, spring takes its own sweet time arriving. I am always eager to start adding a few springtime touches to the house but find it best to take Mother Nature’s lead and move slowly. A few fresh flowers help brighten up the interior but they are slow to appear in the yard, so I like to cut branches from the flowering trees and bushes. I find they last much longer than flowers, and I am eventually rewarded by their blooms. I also love to use non-traditional vases, like this cocktail pitcher and stirrer, to showcase the early spring growth.

Switching out artwork in the house is another easy change. David Allgood’s “Tulips” really sets the mood for the transition of seasons. You can almost feel the changing light in the embossed serigraph.

Soon spring will be in full swing and after a long winter, it will be a gift.

I love to use and re-purpose vintage kitchen gadgets in my kitchen. Not only are they useful but charming, too. This charming white enamelware colander is perfect to store berries or fruit in when not in use, but it would also make the perfect kitchen planter.

I love these because who doesn’t like ticking!! A perennial vintage home decor staple. This grouping includes a round, a square And a rectangle ! The round linen covered one has a surprise inside— more ticking! ( as shown in photo)

Changing out bed linens for the season is another way to get more vintage in our homes and keep things interesting.

I see these on your bed ( as shown) , your sofa, a porch swing , softening up that glider or Adirondack chairs!

Happy Spring!

Book stacks in pastel colors are one of my favorite ways to add a touch of spring to my home. I enjoy frequently changing my mantel décor so that it reflects each new season or a special celebration. Older books often have lovely cloth covers and deckled pages, so they look just as wonderful displayed with either the spines or the page edges showing. Small book stacks wrapped with ribbon or twine look beautiful when displayed under a glass cloche or bell jar, so I am always on the hunt for smaller sized vintage books.

The mantel decor in the photo was created this past April to celebrate a special family milestone . The vintage books stacks in sea glass colors added a touch of spring to the display.
